Klangschachmalerei ein Soundscapegenerator

Konzept und Spielverlauf

1. Aufbau

Ein Schachbrett, Schachfiguren und eine Schachuhr - an sich ein gewöhnlicher Aufbau für eine Schachpartie. Über dem Schachbrett ist jedoch eine Webcam angebracht und auf einem Monitor werden potentielle Informationen angezeigt. Zum Beispiel, ob Samples (Feldaufnahmen) eines Themenbereichs geladen werden sollen.
Sobald die Vorbereitung beendet ist, ist jedem Schachfeld ein Audiofile zugewiesen.

2. Klangschach spielen

Mit jeder Betätigung der Schachuhr wird die die das Spielbrett untersucht:
a) Registriert das Programm auf ein Feld zum ersten Mal eine Figur, so werden für den linken und rechten Kanal getrennt zufällige Parameter für In- und Outpoint, Geschwindigkeit und Abspeilrichtung gesetzt. Das definierte Sample wird nun in der Schleife abgespielt.
b) Bleibt eine Figur auf einem Feld stehen, so wird der Loop fortgesetzt, jedoch in der Lautstärke um einen zufälligen Wert abgesenkt.
c) Steht keine Figur auf dem Feld, so wird das Sample ausgeblendet und alle Parameter verlieren ihre Gültigkeit.

Im Eröffnungsspiel verdichten sich zunehmend die Klänge, werden zu polyrhythmische Strukturen, lösen sich voneinander, überlagern sich, bilden Schichten aus Klangwolken. Je nach Verlauf löst sich das akustische Bild im Endspiel auf.

Die Kontrolle über die zu hörende Klangschaft alterniert zwischen Spielenden (Taktik, Geschwindigkeit) und Programmcode (Sampleauswahl, Paramater), das Schachbrett fungiert als Schnittstelle.

3. Spielende

Wird die Uhr angehalten, so wird auch der Soundscapegenerator ausgeblendet und angehalten.
Zudem erscheint auf dem Kontrollmonitor die Quelle der Feldaufnahmen.

Hören als Akt

Hören ist, solange der Hörsinn nicht beeinträchtigt ist, so rudimentär und gewöhnlich wie das Atmen. Dementsprechend leicht wird etwas überhört und damit  schlicht ignoriert. Ebenso leichtfertig ergänzt man im Moment des Zuhörens einen Satz oder schreibt akustische Phänomene einer bestimmten Quelle zu. Dabei unterliegt man sehr schnell einer Täuschung. Manchmal gerne, etwa bei der Stereophonie und manchmal unbewusst, etwa bei synthetischen Instrumenten nach bekannten Vorbildern.

Dem Soundscapegenerator Klangschachmalerei liegt die Idee zugrunde, das unbewusst wahrgenommene akustische Umfeld zum musikalischen Grundmaterial zu erklären. Damit wird aus dem Vorgang des Hörens ein Akt des Hinhörens und Zuhörens. Die Konzentration auf das Klangereignis, aber auch die Täuschung durch das vermeintliche akustische Abbild steht konträr zum Prinzip des Interfaces, dem Schachspiel. Der Wechsel zwischen Taktik und Strategie, zwischen Selbstbestimmung und Fremdbestimmung findet dabei nicht nur zwischen den Spielern statt, sondern vielmehr in einer Trinität von Spielern und Schachbrett, das als Interface zwischen Programmcode und Mensch nicht der Spiellogik entsprechend agiert.

Aufgrund der Selektion und Repräsentation des abgespielten Materials zwingt Klangschachmalerei stets eine neue Perspektive einzunehmen. Das "domestizierte Hören"^[1] wird in dem Moment ausser Kraft gesetzt, wenn das, „was sich zwischen Hörobjekt und Hörsubjekt abspielt“^[2] nicht mehr den bekannten “Deutungsregeln und Kausalgesetzen unterliegt“^[3]. Doch bleibt es nicht bei einer Auslöschung einer Zuordnung, sondern es wird stets nach einer Ursache gesucht. Insofern ist der Akt des Täuschens elementar für Komposition und Aufführung der Klangschachmalerei:
„Wer nicht auch anders hören kann, hört nicht." ^[4]

Musiktheorie

Das Konzept der Klangschachmalerei ist an die musiktheoretischen Überlegungen der musique concète angelehnt. Das Rohmaterial ist mit Pierre Schaeffer ein eigenständigen Klangobjekt^[5], das Abspielmedium wird damit zum Instrument. Die  Möglichkeit der Nachbearbeitung ermöglicht einen erweiterten kompositorischen Ausdruck:

„We can act on the tape physically, cutting it, modifying its replay speed. Only the act of listening by a listener can provide us with an account of the perceptible result of these manipulations.“^[6]

Die Radikalität lässt sich auch bei John Cage finden, der vor allem mit dem Zufall als Element gegen intentionale Ereignisse arbeitete.

Mithilfe der freien / Open Source Software Pure Data Extended entsteht bei der Klangschachmalerei etwas stets Neues, unwiederholbares.

ANTHEMITY a participative installation about the Anthem of Europe

Introduction

Europe, who or what are you? A place of multicultural exchange, of cross-fertilisation? Cradle of human rights and democracy? Or just a bureaucratic monster, threatening national sovereignty, and quite pointless in view of globalisation? Is Europe as a political amalgamation paying attention to social aspects? Where will this lead to?
Utopian Europe, as a region of cohabitation, is deep-rooted in symbols. Symbols that manifest the supra-national merging: a common currency, a common flag and a common Anthem of Europe, the Prelude from “Ode to the Joy”, Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Referring to the unspoken motto: „All humans will become brothers”. Our daily life is already using the possibilities of the European Union: we can travel around, sell and buy items, settle and work wherever we want. With a minimum of bureaucratic effort. The European Union as a step forward to a pacifistic and democratic World Union? Or is Brussels a symbol of the post-democratic society, where economics are the new sovereigns? Somewhere in between, the inhabitants of Europe have to position themselves.
The installation ANTHEMITY focuses on the anthem and asks to what extent an European identity might be discovered.

For that reason, it is necessary to involve the inhabitants of Europe: All of you – those who have found a home in the European Union, and those of you still looking for a home in the EU, take the European Anthem and inscribe yourself into it. Deconstruct it. Take parts of it, recomplete it, inject missing items or moods... make your own interpretation! The soundscape project ANTHEMITY is a stage and soundboard for your European vision.

Three scores

ANTHEMITY I

The balance between the supranational organisation of the European Union and the nation states is somewhere between utopia and failure. While Europeans citizens live free and peaceful together almost wherever they want to, there is still not a European social common sense. Nation states try to keep political power to their parliaments. So politics and policies are alternating between harmonisation and individualism, between jurisdiction and directives.

Anthemity I reflects how the Europeans deal with national and supranational identity by erasing national borders on the map. 27 moving boxes are placed in a room in a relative distance of the EU member state capitals. Each box contains a computer, playing specific versions of the European anthem in a randomized loop and by that representing the capitals. Referring to the legislative period of the EU parliament, every fifth time the anthem is played, all computers are synchronized via the wireless network.

Visitors walking through the room will discover new acoustic axes, interferences, filterings or attenuations, as well as harmonious additions.

ANTHEMITY II

Twelve stars arranged in a circle represent the EU visually. They symbolise the ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe. The number is fix while the amount of members is not. Mobility is the key word and, therefore, there is no singular home but homes.

Anthemity II recreates this circle by replacing the stars with moving boxes as a symbol of un-rooted inhabitants, denying borders voluntarily or because of economic reasons. Each box contains one speaker and is choosen at random, while the canon-like is based on program code.

ANTHEMITY II

The gap between citizens and the EU parliament is noticable. Only a few interested or somehow involved people know the names of the political groups: FEV and ALDE are just two out of seven. Did you know that? These groups merge the interests of several different national parties and thereby Europeans elect their EU representatives more or less indirectly. How much democracy is left in the political system?

With ANTHEMITY III, the parliament of the European Union is hearable. As the country-specific seats Members of Parliament are taken into account, the intensity varies in a specific way. Hence the composition alternates between summarising of individual members of one political group and the allocation of a single country across the political groups.

1. You live in EU-Europe? There's no need for a EU-passport. Everybody living in Europe is part of Europe.

2. You do some creative soundwork on your computer? Or you play historical instruments? All ways are interesting.

5. Your statement will be part of the project.

Çürük – The Pink Report ein Dokumentarfilm

Für das türkische Militär gilt Homosexualität als »psychosexuelle Krankheit« und dient somit als Grund zur Ausmusterung vom Wehrdienst. Dafür wird in einem speziellen Beweisverfahren Homosexualität diagnostiziert.

Çürük – The Pink Report ist eine intime Begegnung mit vier Männern und ihren bewegenden Geschichten zwischen institutionalisierter Gewalt, panischer Angst und dem Wunsch nach Anerkennung in einer Gesellschaft, die sie als krank, faul, verdorben – çürük – bezeichnet.

Das schönste an diesem Projekt ist, dass Çürük - The Pink Report auf zahlreichen Festivals lief und mit Sicherheit noch weiter laufen wird.

35.000 Stunden ein Kurzspielfilm

Nach der Trennung verbringen zwei Menschen noch einmal eine Nacht zusammen.
Er und Sie, in einer Wohnung, die ihre gemeinsame war, mit den Versatzstücken ihrer Beziehung: gemeinsame Lieder, alte Teetassen und ein fremdes Bett. Sie suchen nach dem Grund für das Nicht-Mehr-Zusammensein-Können. Sie kennen sich in- und auswendig und doch so wenig. Was bleibt, wenn man geht?

EMERGEANDSEE media arts festival

Die Mischung aus Kurzfilm, Medienkunst und Vortrag zu einem übergeordneten Thema ist das Besondere des wunderbaren EMERGEANDSEE media arts festivals. In den Jahren 2010 und 2011 zeichnete ich mich für den technischen Ablauf zuständig.

Die Zukunft des Festivals lässt sich auf Facebook und Twitter verfolgen.

Regensburger Kurzfilmwoche

Seit September 2012 bin ich bei der Regensburger Kurzfilmwoche als Assistent der Festivalleitung angestellt. Die Kurzfilmwoche ist nicht nur das größte Kurzfilmfestival Süddeutschlands, sie gehört auch zu dem erlauchten Kreis der Referenzfestivals in Deutschland. Unser Anspruch, eine hochwertiges Programm zusammenzustellen, wird regelmäßig durch andere Festivals honoriert.
Die nächste Kurzfilmwoche findet vom 13. - 20. März 2013 statt. Und nebenbei planen wir auch schon die Ausgabe 2014, denn da feiern wir 20jähriges!
